Summer Skincare: 6 Tips for Glowing Summer Skin


Ah – summertime. It’s the time of year everyone waits for, and after a long winter, you and your skin are probably ready for a change. Winter, with its dry, cold air and lack of sun, is notoriously bad for your skin, but just because it’s summertime doesn’t mean you can set skincare to the side. 

As the weather gets warmer, more of your skin is exposed to the sun. And with increased humidity and temperatures, your body will produce more sweat in order to keep you cool. As a result, your skin oil glands are activated and your skin may become more susceptible to pimples. 

Summertime brings with it its own skincare fundamentals, and following these practices will allow you to have happy, healthy skin all year long.

  • Always, ALWAYS wear sunscreen

  • Repeat after me: if you don’t use SPF, your ten step skincare routine doesn’t matter. SPF is the most important step of your skincare routine, especially in the summertime when more of your skin is exposed to the sun for longer periods of time, and the UV ray index is higher. 

    Although you may love lying in the sun for hours on end, the sun’s ultraviolet radiation can cause more than one type of damage. 

    • Dry skin: Sun-exposed skin can lose moisture and essential oils, making it appear dry, flakey, or prematurely wrinkled – even in young people. 

    • Sunburn: Sunburn refers to skin damage that appears immediately after the skin is exposed to UV radiation. 

    • Long-term changes in the skin’s collagen: Increased sun exposure can cause changes in collagen, a structural protein in the skin. This can lead to photoaging – premature aging caused by sun exposure. In photoaging, the skin develops fine lines and wrinkles because of the changes in collagen.

    Over time, repeated sun burns or sun exposure can increase your risk of malignant melanoma or other forms of skin cancer.

    Before going outdoors, apply sunscreen of SPF30 or higher to all exposed skin, and reapply every few hours. 

  • Opt for a lighter moisturizer

  • Summertime is all about keeping things light and breezy, and that includes your skincare. With increased humidity, you may no longer need the heavy, rich moisturizers you needed during the dry winter months.

  • Add in an extra exfoliation
