Summer Skincare: 6 Tips for Glowing Summer Skin

Ah – summertime. It’s the time of year everyone waits for, and after a long winter, you and your skin are probably ready for a change. Winter, with its dry, cold air and lack of sun, is notoriously bad for your skin, but just because it’s summertime doesn’t mean you can set skincare to the side.

As the weather gets warmer, more of your skin is exposed to the sun. And with increased humidity and temperatures, your body will produce more sweat in order to keep you cool. As a result, your skin oil glands are activated and your skin may become more susceptible to pimples.

Summertime brings with it its own skincare fundamentals, and following these practices will allow you to have happy, healthy skin all year long.

We’ve gone over a few summer skincare practices and products that you need to include in your routine this summer.

Let’s take a look.

  • Always, ALWAYS wear sunscreen

  • Repeat after me: if you don’t use SPF, your ten step skincare routine doesn’t matter. SPF is the most important step of your skincare routine, especially in the summertime when more of your skin is exposed to the sun for longer periods of time, and the UV ray index is higher.

Although you may love lying in the sun for hours on end, the sun’s ultraviolet radiation can cause more than one type of damage.

    • Dry skin: Sun-exposed skin can lose moisture and essential oils, making it appear dry, flakey, or prematurely wrinkled – even in young people.

    • Sunburn: Sunburn refers to skin damage that appears immediately after the skin is exposed to UV radiation.

    • Long-term changes in the skin’s collagen: Increased sun exposure can cause changes in collagen, a structural protein in the skin. This can lead to photoaging – premature aging caused by sun exposure. In photoaging, the skin develops fine lines and wrinkles because of the changes in collagen.

Over time, repeated sun burns or sun exposure can increase your risk of malignant melanoma or other forms of skin cancer.

Before going outdoors, apply sunscreen of SPF30 or higher to all exposed skin, and reapply every few hours.

  • Opt for a lighter moisturizer

  • Summertime is all about keeping things light and breezy, and that includes your skincare. With increased humidity, you may no longer need the heavy, rich moisturizers you needed during the dry winter months.

That doesn’t mean that you don’t need moisturizer though! Moisturizer is key for locking the good ingredients from your skincare routine into your skin, and keeping your skin happy. Even if your skin already feels oily, the extra layer of sweat is not a moisturizer.

Instead, choose a lighter moisturizer, like Goya Naturals Lotion Stick. This all-purpose balm can be used on your face, hands, neck, decolletage, or anywhere else that may need some extra moisture. In a convenient lotion-stick form, its perfect for popping into your purse or beach bag, and using while you’re on the go. Each stick contains 76 grams of product, and lasts anywhere from six months to a year!

Or, try Goya Naturals Mini Lotion Bar – a mess-free, waste-free lotion that quickly nourishes your skin without leaving it feeling greasy or sticky. Simply cup the bar in your hand, sweep it across your skin, and rub in any excess. A little goes a long way!

  • Add in an extra exfoliation

  • Exfoliation is the process of removing the layer of dead skin which can clog your pores. Not over-exfoliating is always important, but the summertime may require you to exfoliate more than you normally would.

During the summer months, your skin is prone to creating more oil, which means your pores are likely to become more congested. To combat this, using a chemical exfoliation is key. This doesn’t mean that you should exfoliate everyday, but simply to add an extra day of exfoliation to your routine each week. As always, listen to your skin – you may not need extra exfoliation in the summertime.

  • Don’t forget to hydrate

  • “Drink more water” seems to be the fix for everything these days, but when it comes to summer skincare, it’s a must. Your body sweats more than usual during the warm summer months, and all that sweat means that your body is losing water quicker than usual. Drinking water strengthens your skins cells, helping their hydration, elasticity, and cleansing. It is also the best thing you can do to prevent your skin from becoming dull and dehydrated.

  • Try a vitamin C serum

  • Vitamin C serums have increased in popularity in the skincare world, and for good reason. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that supports healthier-looking skin and can neutralise oxidants to help prevent visible skin damage.

Vitamin C is an effective antioxidant that can help combat the effects of pollution, smoke, sun exposure on your skin. It also promotes collagen and elastin synthesis and specifically inhibits melanin to reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation. If your skin appears dull or lacklustre, a vitamin C serum can help you recover your radiant glow.

The powerful summer sun can cause UV damage to your skin, drying it out. Vitamin C can help protect your skin against this damage, and is an especially beneficial product for dry skin.

    Don’t forget your lips

When choosing light, hydrating moisturizers for your skin, don’t neglect your lips! Your lips are just as vulnerable to the sun’s harmful rays as the rest of the body, and can quickly dry out if you’re not careful.

Goya Naturals Lip Balm are an excellent way to give your lips the invigorating hydration they deserve. Made with all natural ingredients, Goya Naturals Lip Balms are full of vitamins and antioxidants, including vitamins A,E,C, and D. Each package is recyclable and biodegradable, so that you can feel good about what you’re doing for your lips and the planet.

    Summer skincare, summed up

When it comes to summer skincare, it’s all about keeping it light, moisturized, and protected from the sun’s harmful rays. Simplifying your routine, choosing a light yet hydrating moisturizer, and always including SPF in your routine will help you achieve the glowing, summer skin you want.
